tithing and saving

pastor preached a sermon on giving generously today.
he said 10%, not very generous :P
what happens to saving money? is the christian supposed to live by faith and not save money? to live like tomorrow may not come, to spend and live a simple life (like a monk, nah)?
before you say that generous giving has to be mixed with saving of money, what about those spiritual 'giants' - like john wesley who died with only 10 pounds to his name?
tell me tell me, because i only have 22 bucks in my bank account and i need bragging rights. hahaha

  • hey jawn!

my understanding of this is that saving money is just part of the widely-accepted capitalist way of life. doesn't necessarily mean it's right. the capitalist economic creed reads something like, hoard your money in anticipation for tomorrow when you may need it. it sounds sensible. I mean, most people would say it is. but nowhere in the Bible does God say that. instead He says to trust in Him to provide, and to give freely. look at the verses in matthew, mark and luke likening a rich man entering the kingdom of God to a camel passing through the eye of a needle. it's not that being rich itself is a sin - it's the implication of being rich while there are still poor people in the world - it means that the rich man is not sharing. all part of love thy neighbour.
